Environmental and Natural Resources

Alabama is naturally rich in forests, wildlife and soil.  Preserving this abundance of natural resources and protecting the environment are crucial components of research programs at several AAES research centers and units throughout the state.

Research at the Monroeville Agricultural Research Unit is focused on long leaf pine; the Deer Lab located at the Piedmont Agricultural Research Unit provides a controlled environment for  research on the biology of white-tailed deer.

Soil fertility research receives attention at both the Prattville Agricultural Research Unit and the E.V. Smith Research Center Field Crops Unit while the EVSRC Farm Services Unit conducts research on erosion control with the College of Agriculture’s Department of Biosystems Engineering and the Alabama Department of Transportation.
