Four major field crops--corn, cotton, soybeans and peanut--were planted on more than 1.1 million acres of cropland in Alabama during 2009 with a total value of production exceeding $506 million; forage crops, wheat and hay were planted on more than 1 million acres generating $193 million in production value. The large number of commercially available varieties of field and forage crops can make it difficult for growers to select varieties most suited for their particular area of the state. Research conducted at experiment station centers and units throughout Alabama provides up-to-date, unbiased and reliable information on varietal yields and characteristics. Variety trials are conducted annually throughout Alabama. North Alabama
